RATIONALE
Describing pain is a challenging tasks due to the subjectivity that characterizes it.
A more comprehensive definition was first provided by the IASP (International Association for the Study of Pain) in 1986, which defined it as: 'An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage.'
Recent estimates have identified that the prevalence of chronic pain in the population reaches 35% of the total, providing an empirical yet effective measure of its severity on overall health. The concept of pain has evolved over the years, transitioning from being a condition primarily associated with terminal illness to now being considered a ‘disease within a disease,’ with characteristics that vary from individual to individual.
